Chapter 92 (109 NO) Vailea massaged her throbbing temples as she studied Mij’s datapad, trying not to brush the ugly scar on her forehead in the process. She and Maze had trekked over to Kyrimorut today, and Vailea had set up in one of the homestead’s many, many rooms. This one was absolutely packed with high-end medical equipment, much of which was more advanced than what she’d had to work with at the Rehab Center on Coruscant. It was incongruous to have billions of credits of equipment in what was basically the middle of a farm field, right next to a level III virology lab. Ordo had gone overboard in terms of medical procurement after Yover’s injury. “Seas,” Vailea muttered. She hadn’t wanted to get roped into this case; it was too much of whatever shenanigans routinely happened at Kyrimorut. But this patient

Chapter 91 (105 NO) Maze was piloting Bralor’s hovertruck into Enceri today, taking a circuitous route whose approach wouldn’t create a direct vector to Bralor’s homestead. Vailea was seated in the cab beside him, helmet on her lap. She gave it the occasional, resentful glance. The passenger hold included Rav and Vercopa, which was pretty usual, but also Walon Vau and his strill, which wasn’t. Maze wasn’t thrilled about it, or about one of the people they were scheduled to meet in town. Vailea went for a swim most mornings now that she had her wetsuit. Maze found that he enjoyed this as well, even though it didn’t mean time alone with Vailea. Vercopa had been coming along for their swims, and Maze found he quite liked the kid even though one-on-one time with Vailea was generally hard to come by at Bralor’s homestead. That made it difficult to have a conversation, let alone

Perhaps that wasn’t saying much during winter on Mandalore, but this was legitimately early. Maybe it was just the earliness making things seem extra frigid and dark; they were well prepared for this mission, so Sebbas doubted his feelings of foreboding were worthwhile. He wasn’t a superstitious man, but was still trying to shake the unsteady feeling that had set in after the Oyu’baat raid. Out on the garrison’s air strip, Sebbas took a moment to glance up at the sky. Even Keldabe, the largest city on the planet, didn’t have a lot of light pollution, so the stars were crystalline and beautiful. They seemed so close, and yet were so far away. He drew in a slow breath of the night air, and felt glad that Reau and her team of Death Watch Mandalorians seemed to be using their internal helmet comlinks. It meant he didn’t have to hear her grating, iron

You know that’s a terrible idea, right?” “Look, I’m not saying I’m going to let Jusik mess about with my brain,” Maze said, accompanying Vailea to the lake near Bralor’s homestead. “I’m just saying that’s Skirata’s brilliant plan for Zey and Kina Ha. Erase their memories so that they can’t give away Kyrimorut’s location.” “And what other neural connections get culled at the same time?” she demanded, clutching a thermal blanket around her shoulders as they crunched over icy gravel. “Has Jusik had any training in neuroscience whatsoever?” “Jusik got someone waking again after he was braindead: Fi,” Maze said fairly. “But formal training, like school? I doubt it.” They were still pondering Zey’s update about his plans to join up with another Jedi and leave Mandalore, taking advantage of some

He was certain he didn’t want Skirata in on the plan, so finding a quiet spot and moment to test out the fledgling idea took some finesse. The sitting area of Zey’s quarters at Skirata’s homestead seemed as likely a place as any. Maze would have preferred the deep, deserted woods, but Master Kina Ha wasn’t that mobile. That could be a problem. Still, he figured not too many Skiratas came looking for Zey’s company, so they were closeted in the place Zey and Kina Ha often sat during the day, when they weren’t helping in the kitchen. “Hold still, my dear,” Kina Ha admonished. “Sorry,” Vailea replied, standing on a chair while Kina Ha paced around her, pin cushion hovering untouched as the ancient Kaminoan worked on fitting Vailea’s new

He wasn’t sure what the point of it was, leaving thick streaks of color from square, oily crayons on real paper. He hadn’t really done something like this before, but it was sort of… satisfying. Vercopa filled her first page with disconnected doodles: helmets and nuna and flowers surrounding a large, central animal with so many teeth it had to be a strill. “What are you going to draw, Uncle?” Vercopa asked him, earnestly bent over her own paper. Nothing occurred to him, so he settled on rendering a precise floor plan of Bralor’s house. Vercopa encouraged him, and he felt absurdly pleased, then wondered if he should have been praising her own efforts. She’d started on a second drawing now, which she promised to give him if he’d read her stories at bedtime. He accepted even though

You don’t mind tagging along, do you, Hadrion? That Isabet Reau was a complete schutta, with her leering smile and bristling armory of Mandalorian iron. Commander Adtekko had pulled him aside beforehand – a pep talk of sorts about needing to keep an eye on Reau, their ostensible ally. It was probably meant to make him feel better about serving as the observer on Reau’s operation. Clearly no one else had wanted the task, and so Adtekko had pawned it off on Sebbas. He’d made noises about how well Sebbas had acquitted himself during the Oyu’baat raid, like this somehow made him capable of commanding infantry. Far from feeling qualified for combat leadership rather than logistics or intelligence, Sebbas had been having nightmares about fighting the woman in gold armor. He tried to make up for the

Chapter 85 (94 NO) Maze didn’t manage a reply, just squeezed harder, so Vailea simply held on, trusting that words would come when the time was right. Maze relaxed fractionally after a few minutes, but didn’t release her, and Vailea certainly wasn’t going to be the first one to let go. “Want me to ask you about it?” she whispered. “Not yet.” “After dinner?” He nodded into her hair, and then Vailea felt his fingers exploring her curls. Maze sighed and his breathing eased back towards normal. “Sorry.” “I don’t mind,” she assured him. “This is better than taking off on my own,” he noted, examining her face carefully. She nodded. Vailea could feel his gaze on her scar and tried not to let it bother her, without much success. “Can you still check me over even if you can’t be my

Chapter 84 (94 NO) Vailea reached into her lab coat pocket for a hydrospanner and used it to pry off the wash bot’s housing. Earlier that day, Arligan had come to Rav’s place and levitated the whole festering thing into the workshop area of the basement hangar. It was unwieldly and the steps were steep, so that had seemed wiser to Vailea than getting anyone to lug the thing manually. She and Rav were going to Enceri tomorrow to pick up a new wash bot, and in the meantime Vailea was stripping the old one for parts. “Where did you get this bot, Rav?” Vailea muttered to herself, as she came across the fourth bolt of a different size so far. Someone seemed to have cobbled the damn thing together from utter scrap; it was a miracle it had ever washed a dish at all. No one answered her question, of course. Rav was outside running hills with Vercopa while Levet and Yover made

Jennifer Freyd, a name to remember
I don't know why it's taken me this long to learn the name of Jennifer Freyd, the psychologist who works on interpersonal and institutional trauma. She coined the term DARVO (when abusers Deny, Accuse, Reverse Victim and Offender roles) as well as betrayal blindness and institutional betrayal. I am passionate about trauma, healing, justice, doing better. And her work is the backbone of so much of the new research on interpersonal violence and recovery. I've heard references to DARVO I don't how many times at this point. For those who struggle to find love in the wake of trauma, this is gold. Whether you want the empirical research side of things (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XIFBts9s56o) or a much more practical framework for the everyday (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OmwPb8AxxVI). One of the sad but common trends in interpersonal violence is that it's often made worse by institutions that condone the violence or punish survivors who seek justice. That was certainly the case

Welcome to National Haiku Writing Month, 2024 by CouchSessions, journal
Welcome to National Haiku Writing Month, 2024
But First, a Tribute... As many may be aware, the DA literature community lost a giant last year. @Barosus passed away in November 2023. He was a long time Community Volunteer and a great lover of Haiku and other forms of Eastern poetry. Ed is survived by his wife, Marcie, who has since taken over his account. Our condolences and hope for healing are with her. Ed personally inspired my love of Haiku. He encouraged my growth in the art form and was a dependable source of inspiration and feedback. The hole he left will never be filled. RIP, my froggy friend. You are sorely missed. In His Honor... The first weekly theme of #haikuwrimo2024 is FROGS. You may submit your Haiku to the 2024 Gallery There is much more to come... Challenges, contests, and prizes! Look out this Saturday, February 3rd for more details. In the meantime, hoppy writing!
I like this website. That's why I'm sad. Search results are filled with AI images. Of all things, Team held an AI image contest. I think the value of art created by humans will increase as the number of AI images increases. However, it's really sad that the artists who hate AI have left, and the number of people who like their art on this website has decreased, decreasing in website's value. If DA doesn't stop endorsing AI, this site will be a shell or a dead letter. Once, I was saved by DA. So I appreciate it. I think probably a wish that won't come true, but I want DeviantArt to return to the lively and fun days of those days. I just think it.
Idea taken from @SamwiseTheAwesome ! 2024 has begun and is off to a good start, let's keep the ball rolling! Let me know if you'd like a feature, I'll look through your gallery and pick a couple that I like and let you know what I like about them. My only ask is that if you're featured, spread the love! Make a Let's Share post of your own, and I would love for you to look though my galley. FEATURES: @SamwiseTheAwesome I just love these textures. Really nice body language and expressions! @DC-26 It's harder for me to find features of long-form writing because I haven't been keeping track of my favorite chapters, but I really like 1207 because of how easy it was to get into the story despite having next to no background about it. (Actually that is why I like all of DC's writing!) Restless is being featured because of Vercopa. She is best character. @Midn1ghtInk LOOK AT THIS BOWL!!!! it's so beautiful!!! I really love this poem

Are there any new folks that want a feature? UPDATE I: @BrowncoatMando This is the first of the next generation of the Rangers stories that we've been working on together, nice to see our shared world continuing! These HeroForge concepts are great for putting ideas to metaphorical paper. They have been a great boon to the Bex Verse! This is a fun piece of abstract historical prose! I'm glad you explained it, I'm not the greatest at picking up on that @gambitx18 Love seeing people outside of myself and BrowncoatMando adding to the BexVerse!

It is morning, somehow. Blue wash, gray field. I need to be gone. Instead I sit by the window, thinking of nothing at all. I am watching my mother. Outside she reaches high, picking apples. She is not Eve. She is not even the snake. O God, she gives freely to her sheep. I don’t know why she does this at seven o’clock, still in pajamas-- voluntarily, as though the dew doesn’t seep in right to the bone— but the sheep have gathered, lining up at the fence for their treat. Really, I do need to be gone, but I watch her lob the apples wide into the field, making sure everyone gets at least one.

That's Arab-American Heritage Month where I live. It is also snowing today. I had a couple weeks in March where I had good writing days, but mostly it is still a struggle. Part of the problem for me, I think, is that I'm not settling into a story I really want to write. I got reviews for an article manuscript for work yesterday, so I will need to spend my energy on that for the next two months as well as getting a grant proposal turned in 11 April. Remember when I had enough spoons for hobby writing and work? That was

That means Women's History Month in the US, so go and get you some learnin'. I didn't do a mid-month check-in during February (again) because... I didn't have much to share. I have been struggling to write because I have more limited energy and am obligated to use it elsewhere. This is hard and sad for me and I'm not sure what to do with that. I have a lot of ideas and stories I'd like to write, and I know the best time for me to do that is the morning. I'm going to keep trying. Not looking for advice at this
found in a journal from @CouchSessions Meaning of my Username: The initials are what I now use as a pen name, and derive from a Star Wars character I invented, enjoyed for a long time, and have now let ease into gentle twilight. The 26 is a reference to my favorite clone trooper (Captain Maze, A-26). So... it is really all just very, very obscure starwarsstuff. One Meal to Rule Them All: Shockingly hard to decide. Probably something involving lots of pasta and cheese and maybe seafood? Shrimp alfredo? Best Gift Ever: I feel like I should say something deep here and not "the old school Ariel doll I got when I was 9." Hmmm... knowing enough people that I can figure out how to get to dance class even though I can't drive myself. That's even better. Job I Wanted When I Was Little: Princess-ballerina-archaeologist faded petty quickly. I discovered I would have to marry someone to be a princess and was like "hard pass," and ballet turned out not to be my thing. So... archaeologist? That
